When we bought our home, the house next door was unoccupied and in need of repair. But, more importantly, under that neighboring house were a pair of eyes. If you are a cat lover, you can guess what happened next...
That's right, we put out food for those eyes. And as one can imagine, those eyes multiplied. And soon we had our own feral colony coming for dinner every evening. Then one day the tiniest kitten I had ever seen came along. Soon the other little ones also started to show up and we watched the little family nightly. It only took a couple of weeks to befriend the mother and to my horror she seemed to be pregnant. As time went on we grew more and more fearful that she would drop the litter and not possibly be able to take care of both sets. We decided it was time to bring her in. She was given an empty bedroom for her own. It took us about a week and a half to catch the seven kittens.
As so many who have traveled down this same road will tell you... Once you start, you can't stop. They seek you out. They know who you are and they swamp to you. After we had Bobbie's litter taken care of (all terribly sick), then Links showed up with her 3... Then there was Clementine with her 5 (all with ring worm!). Then there were the 3 sets of bottle babies, and the litter from our vet...
It is an endless cycle. We have adopted out many and fixed even more. We love them all, and the work and cost is repaid a thousand fold by the joy of helping them.
